Preparing students for exams - Some tips
Get to know the test inside out
It is essential to know the different task types for each exam and understand what they may struggle with. You’ll need to provide them with plenty of tips and techniques on how best to approach each task type and I recommend doing the tests yourselves so that you know what issues they may come across. It is not enough just to know the correct answer you you should also understand why.
Practice is essential
Start practice early so that the students can see what they are aiming for. In October make sure that they have the appropriate exam preparation pack of practice tests. Between then and February try to do about 3 or 4 practice tests to determine the level and see which areas need more attention.
In March we need to start deciding which students will enter the exams in the summer. Before the easter holidays we should give their parents the exam information with dates and a registration form.
Give them regular exam practice especially for parts where they are struggling
Giving and correcting practice tests
All students who are preparing for exams will receive a preparation pack with lots practice tests. They should also me encouraged to use the allexamenglish.site as much as possible.
Practice exams should really be done outside of the classroom as a homework task so that they don’t take up so much teaching time. However, you may need to explain how to do some parts of the test to some groups which may require some lesson time. You can explain how to approach parts of the test and you can guide them a little as to how to find the answer.
Correcting the exam
1. Correct the tests yourself indicating wrong answers but not giving the correct answer.
2. Complete the results sheet at the start of the exam pack
3. Students look at their errors at home and try to figure out their mistakes.
4. Following class review the errors together and address any language areas or skills.
Exam practice should be a learning experience for them. Therefore, reviewing and understanding their own errors is vital.
Keep an eye on the parts of the test that they are struggling with and any grammatical points that may need to review.
